Structure of the Scouting Organization
Watch for updates. Things are changing too fast right now!

1st Woodlawn group is one of six groups in Dartmouth East Area. This group is sponsored by Woodlawn United Church, and four of the others are likewise sponsored by churches. |

Because of population trends in Dartmouth Region over the last few decades, Areas (formerly known as districts) within Dartmouth region have undergone changes. For a long time there were only three districts in Dartmouth Region: Dartmouth East, Dartmouth South, and Dartmouth North. But then in 1990, things started to happen.
1990 - That portion of the region east of Dartmouth city limits, all the way to Chezzetcook, was reorganized to form two new districts: Forest Lakes (for communities along highway #7) and Atlantic View (Shearwater, Eastern Passage, and places along highway #207 to Lawrencetown. |
Dartmouth East Area is responsible mainly for supporting the Scout program through its service team, which includes its Area Commissioner (A.C.), and an Assistant (A.A.C.) for each of the Scouting levels. This service team maintains its effectiveness by visiting the local groups regularly, and organizing activities for all levels throughout the Scouting year. The Area Service team may also be involved in interviewing new leaders.

Dartmouth Region is the next senior council above 1st Woodlawn Scout Group. At the Regional level, there is an active Council, complete with table officers, to handle all administrative tasks. Instead of communicating with local Scout groups through a District Council, it now does so by means of the Area Reps, each of whom sits on Regional Council, and in turn meet with the chairpersons of each Scout Group. | In addition to the administrative tasks handled by Regional Council, Scouting programs are supported by a service team of experienced program Scouters. The training of leaders is also supported by the Regional Service team.
Dartmouth Region operates Camp Harris, situated on the western side of Lawrencetown Lake, accessible from Mineville Road.
| Provincial Scout Headquarters are situated on Quinpool Road in Halifax. The Scout shop is on the first floor, and the administrative offices are on the second floor. Parking is available for those there on business. | Click here to visit the provincial Scouting website.

| As you might guess, National headquarters for Scouts Canada are located in Ottawa. Formerly known as Boy Scouts of Canada, this organization became officially and totally co-ed by a motion passed in November of 1998. This means that girls who wish to join a Scouting section will be afforded the same opportunities as boys. Naturally, this requires the presence of female as well as male leaders in all sections. In our Group, it works very well. It simply brings Scouting more in line with other places such as school where a mixed gender milieu has long been taken for granted. |
The Leader magazine is published ten times a year. It contains program ideas and interesting articles. Many back issues are available, and some articles can be downloaded either in html or pdf format.
| What you see to the left is the World Scout emblem, which is worn above the left pocket on the Scout Shirt. World Scout Headquarters, located in Geneva, Switzerland, is the focal point for the Scouting organizations of some 216 countries of the world, to which more than 25 million members - youth and adult - belong. The countries of the world all have their own badge programs, uniforms, and traditions. However, they are all bound by several recognizable features: among them - adherence to the basic principles of Scouting, the unique Beaver, Cub, and Scout salutes, and the left handshake. |
